Aug. 11th, 2020 09:39 pmThis past weekend, my grandmother who lives in Poland passed away at the age of 99. She had broken her leg almost four years ago, and had been bedridden since. In the hospital they were able to put some sort of brace in her leg to hold the bone together, but she was never able to bear weight on that leg again. Since that time, my father's three sisters who live near her took very good care of her, bathing her and cooking for her. Nonetheless, her time had come.
My grandmother was a great lady. Even though I am terrible at keeping in touch with people, she always asked my father how my brother and I are doing. Mentally, she stayed sharp as a tack right to the end. I wonder what kind of relationship we would have had if we lived on the same continent.
It's unfortunate that my parents can't travel over there for the funeral, thanks to COVID travel restrictions. I guess we'll all just have to make our way over there to pay our final respects whenever the world normalizes.
I am happy I got to visit her four years ago, when she was still strong and able to walk. Although at that age she mostly stayed in her apartment, she was still mostly in her element. Here's me with my grandmother and my parents from that visit: https://www.instagram.com/p/BF0jymUyKoc/
