A lot of people are anxiously waiting for Mr. Corzine to sign a little piece of paper on his desk, so that civil unions can become a reality in New Jersey.
While the gay populace, myself included, is grateful for finally getting some equal treatment from the law, the fight is far from over. The state law will do nothing for federal recognition. Here's a basic rundown of the ways that CU'ed gays will not benefit:
http://abclocal.go.com/wabc/story?section=news&id=4857577Federal same-sex marriage hits a personal note for me, because it directly affects close friends of mine. I know a gay couple in which one of the partners has deportation looming over his head. If one of the two was a woman, they could have gotten married and the US citizen could have sponsored the other through marriage and this would be a done deal. Because they are both men, even though their commitment to each other is as real as any other, nothing can be done by the US citizen to help the immigrant. Obviously a law at the state level is not going to protect them, so the fight is on to get same-sex marriage recognition at the federal level.
