Dec. 10th, 2004 11:57 pmYou are being detained by the authorities in the country of Turvladistan. There are, however, two doors. One of these, you know not which, leads to freedom, and the other to execution. In front of each door there is a guard. All you know is that one of these guards always tells the truth and the other always lies. Of course the guards know which door is which and which of them is a liar and which always tells the truth. You are permitted to ask one of the guards a simple yes-no question and then to pass through the door of your choice. After much deliberation you ask one of the guards the following question: "If I were to ask the other guard whether he stands in front of the door to freedom would he answer 'yes' ?" Will the answer to this question guarantee that you can choose the door to freedom?
EDIT: Remember that you do not know which guard is in front of which door. However, no matter which guard is in front of which door, the guard that answers "yes" is always the guard that stands in front of the door to freedom. The guard that stands in front of the door to doom will always answer "no." In this way, you will be able to tell which door is the door to freedom.
