I spent a good portion of my formative years listening to heavy metal music, among them the musical stylings of the band Pantera. The four members of the group each fit together perfectly to form a powerhouse of intense, blistering music. In time, the band ran its course and broke up, and the various members went their separate ways.
As I aged, I guess I mellowed a bit. I no longer an angst-ridden teen with percolating hormones. Nevertheless, I still like to throw the heavy shit in now and again.
This morning at work I find out that Pantera Guitarist Dimebag Darrel has been shot by a deranged fan, onstage, while he was performing. While I don't listen to Pantera as much as I used to, I still feel that it's a tremendous loss to the musical community. And this wasn't some drug-addled rocker who slipped into the throes of addiction and faded to obscurity. This was an entertainer who was shot because some dork couldn't get over the fact that Pantera broke up and time moves on.
The death of Dimebag is probably not as big news as the death of John Lennon, but it is noteworthy enough. Really, they're just entertainers. All they do is play music. When one arrangement gets old, they regroup and do it again. They're not out to make anyone miserable. If you don't like the new music, just don't go to the show. It isn't hard to do. Now I'm out a favorite guitarist.
On an interesting side-note, Dimebag's shooting comes on the 24-year anniversary of John Lennon's shooting.
On another interesting side-note, 89.5 FM WSOU played Pantera in Dimebag's honor. They haven't played any Pantera in probably about four years, at least not during regular daytime hours.
