Oct. 27th, 2015 10:00 pmMy mom traveled back to her native Poland on a little diet/health religious retreat thing a few weeks ago. When I saw her this past weekend, after she had come back, she pulled me aside and told me about what happened while she was there.
She frequently attended a church service while there. She found most of the masses uplifting, until one day halfway through when the priest decided to go with a homophobic sermon. She found the mass so offensive that she almost got up and left.
Before she left, she actually told the priest how offensive the mass was. (The priest, to his credit, was mortified that his mass was taken so badly, and was very apologetic.)
First of all, I was never really sure how my mom took my coming out. Especially at first, she was very uncomfortable with it. So it relieves me to know that she had come around, and I'm grateful that she now has my back.
Secondly, my mom is deeply religious, and I don't think I have ever heard her speak against the Church. And she has never had it in her to defend herself. I'm amazed that she was able to give the priest a piece of her mind like that.
Third, I hope that priest reconsiders using that sermon in the future. As I said, this was in Poland, which is still virulently homophobic. It's entirely possible that he had never encountered someone being offended by homophobia up close. So hopefully a little good will come of the incident.
