May. 26th, 2015 07:36 pmMy cousin C put together a backyard bbq party at his house for Memorial Day and invited a bunch of people over. Among them was his old friend D, who I knew from Boy Scouting (which my mom made me do against my will in my early teens). Pleasant enough, until D had had way too much to drink and started weeping. Turns out D's on antidepressants, and the additive effect was not good. He's also a big, heavy guy - I'm guessing about 320 pounds/ 145 kg, and diabetic.
D kept leaning back in the chair he was sitting in, and the chair's legs were bending under his heft. We spent an hour trying to convince him to move to a stronger chair, because we didn't want him to wind up falling. Seriously, it must have been by the grace of some unseen deity that the chair didn't fall apart under him. It was pretty much ruined by the time we got D to get up and move to the stronger chair.
At some point he got up to drive back home. I grabbed his keys, and C made him stay a few more hours until he sobered up. D sat there weeping about how embarrassed he was about the whole thing. And apparently this wasn't the first time C threw a party and this had happened, and D probably didn't remember any of it the next morning.
Talk about being thoroughly disgusted by someone... it definitely made an otherwise pleasant party rather unenjoyable. It's also sad to see someone letting themself go like this. C is probably going to stop speaking to D, he sounded like he'd had enough. I would have done the same.
Blah. Have some music. Prog bluegrass, y'all:
