Moral dilemma for you all:

For a number of reasons I left the faith I was raised in (Roman Catholicism) and am now an atheist. Recently mom set up a remembrance mass for my grandmother, who passed away 2 1/2 years ago, I refused to go because I don't want anything to do with the Church.

My cousin is getting married in a church this Saturday. As much as I normally will not attend mass, I'm also not going to grandstand on somebody else's day. The only times I've been to mass in quite a number of years now have all been either weddings or funerals.

My mom says the two are the same, and if I go to mass for my cousin's wedding, then I should go to mass for a remembrance mass for my grandmother. I disagree, because a marriage is a once-in-a-lifetime event, while a remembrance can be held at any time (in fact, several remembrance masses have been held since my grandmother's passing, which I also did not attend). And I don't believe I need to physically go to a church to remember

What do you guys all think? Should I have attended a memorial mass if I am willing to attend a wedding? Or are they, indeed, different situations?
