richaarde: (WTF)
My friend Monir has been studying for the Civics exam he has to take to become a a U.S. Citizen. (I haven't written much here about him lately, but I do still talk to him and see him on a regular basis.) I've been helping him study. So far, he has made excellent progress, and he is set to take his test next month.

What bugs me about this test is that a bunch of American-born people seem to have a lot of trouble with these questions. I mean, we live under this system, you would think that at least most of us should be familiar with it. I was able to get most of these questions right on the first try, but I guess I tend to be good at this kind of stuff. (I suppose I should really find out who the mayor of my town is) A few people told me that they didn't know a lot of the answers. What do you folks think? And is it really important to know this stuff?

The link below goes to a PDF (169 kb) of sample questions from the Civics exam. Sample questions are on pages 1-4, and answers to those questions are on pages 5-8.
