Apr. 15th, 2005 09:45 pmOn my way home from work today, I drove the way I usually do, down Route 280 to exit 13, the big Newark exit. As I approached the end of the ramp, there was a whole crew of the local youths selling candy to raise money for what I hope was baseball uniforms or something constructive. (I should add that I often see people selling candy or water bottles, or the occasional beggar, at this location, so this was far from unusual.) They were all selling the same peanut M&M's in very conspicuous yellow packaging.
As I pulled to a stop, one of the kids (really, they were only about 10 years old or so) came up to me and asked if I wanted to buy a pack of M&M's and support his team or whatever. I was kinda hungry, and the M&M's were tempting, aww what the hell I bought a pack. I gave the kid a buck, he gave me a pack of M&M's and went skipping off to the next car.
Another one of the kids came up to me as soon as the first had left. And he also asked if I wanted to buy a pack of M&M's and support his team or whatever. Now by this point I was pretty sure I had just purchased a pack of M&M's, as evidenced by the unopened pack of M&M's on my passenger's side seat and by the fact that I had just given the other kid a dollar. And if I gave this kid another dollar I would have two packs of M&M's, and I wasn't that hungry. So I said no.
The second kid said he wasn't with that kid and would I like to buy a pack of M&M's and support his team or whatever. Now there were about ten of these kids all selling the exact same M&M's, in the same big zip-loc baggies. Smelling something fishy in the market, I again said no.
So the second kid asked me if I was willing to make a small donation. Of course by this point he was practically leaning into my open window. By this point I was kind of irritated and I said I wasn't going to give him any money.
Fortunately the light turned green and I was able to drive off.
