Mar. 20th, 2005 05:57 pmI made a trip down to Sciortino's Pizzeria in South Amboy with one of my friends yesterday. This was the place with the 100-year old brick oven in Perth Amboy, that was torn down to make way for a parking deck for the new police station there. They fought long and hard, and in the end they lost their battle. Well, they took their things and moved across the river into South Amboy, where they converted a bar-and-grill into a new pizza place.
Their pizza is just as good as it was in the old place. They managed to find a new brick oven that was larger than the old one but could produce the same results. The old pizzeria was a tiny little place; the new one is a larger restaurant with an attached sports bar. Their pizza is smaller than your typical pizzas, a large one is just about large enough for two hearty appetites. The crust is very thin and crispy. The sauce is homemade, is very fragrant, and has kind of a sweet taste. We ordered our pizza with sausage and extra sauce. Words cannot describe how good this pizza is. This pizza is about as perfect as one can get.
Sciortino's Pizzeria, corner of Broadway and John St (one block from Bordentown Ave, across from train station), South Amboy, New Jersey. I highly, highly recommend. Just don't go on a weekend, this place gets busy.
