Here's something to wrap your heads around:

It turns out that a provision of the No Child Left Behind Act requires that all schools receiving federal funding provide students' biographical information (names, ages, contact info) to military recruiters when asked, unless a child's parents opt out.

In the article above, one township, Montclair, went to great lengths to inform residents of this policy and convinced an overwhelming majority of parents of students to opt out of the provision.

My respect for the current administration, which was already at an all-time low, has just sunk another notch. The federal gumminit wants to ensure that they will have enough troops for the next time they feel like blowing up another country. So every time the military feels like they're running low on bodies, they can conveniently call up the local schools to coerce the youth to sign up.

(For anyone not from New Jersey, Montclair is a mostly upper-middle class and upper-class community. Paterson and Elizabeth are poor working-class communities, with large poor immigrant populations. Hmmm, I wonder if this has anything to do with which parents were able to get information about the provision.)

Just wanted you all to know that. For anyone that is or knows people in high school, this is something you should really opt out of.
