Stupid people in high places
Apr. 23rd, 2004 04:59 pmFor those of you that haven't already heard, I have been assigned by my job to observe a construction job for the last two weeks or so. Basically a crew of siteworkers are laying conduit in an office park campus. Except that there is already an existing conduit in the ground which can't be disturbed, because if we do then we risk severing a fiber-optic cable which carries about $7 million worth of information per minute.
My job is theoretically to watch the digging while it progresses, to make sure they don't hit the existing conduit. In reality, I'm out there baking my brains in the sun watching these siteworkers, who already have an excellent foreman and who know what they're doing. And of course, the client's people are all out there doing the same thing I'm doing out there, except they're out there in two hour shifts.
As if that's not bad enough, I also get the privelage (?) of watching these people's IT department fight with the Building Operations department over where we can and can't work. IT wants 95% of the job done on Saturdays, and of course that isn't practical, so it's a constant struggle to get things done.
So the end result is that this job is not only extremely boring, but also stressful. And I get to do it for another two weeks. Whee!
Thanks, I had to get that out. You will now return to your regularly scheduled programming.
